The Brush Up Your German group started in New Year 2023.
The group is intended for those who would like to refresh their German speaking skills, particularly if they have not actively used the language for a while. Group members need to have a basic knowledge of German, either through having studied the language at school and/or in adult education classes, or by having spent some time living in a German-speaking country. It is not suitable for complete beginners.
Each meeting focuses on a particular topic of everyday interest – agreed in advance by the group members at the previous meeting. Some of the topics we have discussed so far are:
– Family and friends
– Hobbies and interests
– Travel and holidays
– Food and recipes.
All members are expected to actively participate and contribute something to each session, and although the leader provides structure to the meetings, and offers clarification on grammar and vocabulary as appropriate, the sessions should not be thought of primarily as taught language classes. To make progress, each group member needs to undertake a fair amount of self-directed learning and study. A resource pack is available to help group members structure their learning, and a number of other books and resources available for group members to
borrow.
